A law firm is a business. But unlike other businesses, because of the nature of the product, the only real asset of a law firm is its people.
A successful law firm is based on its good reputation, and that in turn depends on its employees. In particular, this means the partners because of their relatively high profile. But also it means the solicitors who aspire (for personal financial gain) to continue that good reputation and therefore the firm's successful business, and the service personnel beneath them who make the machine work in practice.
It takes a long time to build a good reputation, but it can be quickly undermined if the firm has the wrong people or even the right people with the wrong attitude or lack of motivation.
In short, a law firm is the sum of its people, and if you can successfully manage those people, you will have a successful business.
This course is about successful management. How to make sure you take on the right people for your firm, how to ensure that they progress, are motivated, successful, and, in the event that they are not right for the business, how to terminate their employment. Delegates are asked to actually dismiss someone and a given a critique on their performance.
For the longevity of a successful law firm, solicitors have to learn to be excellent managers as well as excellent lawyers. This course helps them to achieve that.
The course is divided into two modules. Each module is a 3 hour programme (09.30 – 12.30 or 14.00 – 17.00). It is designed for up to 10 delegates. It is a mixture of short presentations, group exercises and feedback and discussion sessions. It is accredited for 3 CPD hours.
